An unusual incident recently led to the delay of a public transit bus in Lower Bavaria, a German region deeply rooted in Christian traditions.
Junge Freiheit reported that to the astonishment of the passengers, the bus driver stopped his vehicle for several minutes during his scheduled route, so that he could carry out his Islamic prayers.
The unexpected stop has raised questions about the boundaries of religious expression during professional duty.
BUS DRIVER MADE UNSCHEDULED STOP TO CARRY OUT ISLAMIC PRAYERS
The incident took place in Ergolding, a market municipality in the Landshut district, while the bus was heading toward the Landshut city centre.
Initial reports indicated that upon reaching a designated stop, the Muslim driver parked the bus, stepped outside, and walked to the back of the bus.
He’s alleged to have then unfolded his prayer rug on the ground and performed his prayers, causing the journey to be delayed by several minutes.
Passengers on board were left startled and confused by the driver’s sudden departure, according to a report by the television channel Sat.1 Bayern.
BUS COMPANY CONFIRMS DRIVER STOPPED TO PRAY, CLARIFYING SOME DETAILS
While the local municipal utility company Stadtwerke Landshut strongly emphasised its employees’ fundamental right to freedom of religion, management explicitly stated that public transportation services must not be interrupted under any circumstances.
After investigating the incident, the company agreed the driver did indeed make an unscheduled stop in Ergolding for several minutes.
However, it claims he prayed silently in an empty row of seats on board the bus.
The bus company couldn’t confirm whether he had a prayer rug with him.
BUS COMPANY APOLOGISES TO PASSENGERS
Stadtwerke Landshut said it “expressly apologised to all affected passengers for the situation and the resulting delays.”
It claimed there were only three passengers on board
“During scheduled service, our drivers must exclusively perform their official duties,” the company asserted.
“Private matters must not, under any circumstances, disrupt service or cause delays for our passengers.”
