The head of the United Nations (UN) warns the global organisation is at risk of “imminent financial collapse” due to member states not paying their fees.
Secretary-General António Guterres said the UN faced a “deepening’ financial crisis which could see its money run out by July.
The BBC reports that at UN headquarters in Geneva: “Signs warning of the situation have been put up everywhere.”
“In an almost desperate attempt to save cash, the escalators are regularly turned off and the heating turned down.”
Mr Guterres wrote in a letter to all 193 member states that they had to honour their mandatory payments or overhaul the organisation’s financial rules to avoid collapse.
US REPORTED TO OWE UNITED NATIONS A$6 BILLION
The UN’s biggest contributor, the United States, has refused to contribute to the regular budget in 2024 and 2025 as well as the bulk of peacekeeping and humanitarian aid budgets.
ABC News (America) reports the US now owes the UN more than A$6 billion.
The US has also withdrawn from more than 30 UN agencies and the same number of independent agencies, including the UN-run World Health Organization (WHO), calling them a “waste of taxpayer dollars”.
Several other members are in arrears or are simply refusing to pay their debts totalling around A$150 million.
UN OBLIGED TO PAY BACK HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS IN CASH “THAT DOES NOT EXIST”.
Mr Guterres revealed 77% of the total owed had been paid in 2025, leaving a record amount unpaid.
Making the situation worse, he says, is a rule that the UN must return unspent money on particular programmes to members, if it could not implement a budget.
So it is “expected to give back cash that does not exist”.
“I cannot overstate the urgency of the situation we now face,” the UN boss declared.
“We cannot execute budgets with uncollected funds, nor return funds we never received.”
UN MAY HAVE TO CHANGE ITS FINANCIAL RULES TO SURVIVE
As a result, the organisation is now returning hundreds of millions of dollars it never actually had.
“The bottom line is clear,” asserted Mr Guterres.
“Either all member states honour their obligations to pay in full and on time.”
“Or member states must fundamentally overhaul our financial rules to prevent an imminent financial collapse.”
WHY THE US HAS QUIT WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION
US Republican Senator Ron Johnson welcomed his nation’s withdrawal from WHO, saying: “This is one of the things that people elected President Trump to do — to withdraw from one world order, global governance.”
American Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Secretary of Health Robert F. Kennedy Junior argued: “Although the United States was a founding member and the WHO’s largest financial contributor, the organisation pursued a politicised, bureaucratic agenda driven by nations hostile to American interests.”
A US Health and Human Services Department (HHS) press release pointed out WHO’s failures more specifically:

“The WHO delayed declaring a global public health emergency and a pandemic during the early stages of COVID-19, costing the world critical weeks as the virus spread,” it said.
“During that period, WHO leadership echoed and praised China’s response despite evidence of early underreporting, suppression of information and delays in confirming human-to-human transmission.”
“The organisation also downplayed asymptomatic transmission risks and failed to promptly acknowledge airborne spread.”
“After the pandemic, the WHO did not adopt meaningful reforms to address political influence, governance weaknesses or poor coordination.”
“WHO TRASHED AND TARNISHED EVERYTHING AMERICA HAS DONE FOR IT”
“That reinforced concerns that politics took priority over rapid, independent public health action and eroding global trust,” the HHS media release continued.
“Its report evaluating the possible origins of COVID-19 rejected the possibility that scientists created the virus,.”
“Even though China refused to provide genetic sequences from individuals infected early in the pandemic and information on the Wuhan laboratories’ activities and biosafety conditions.”
“Even on our way out of the organisation, the WHO tarnished and trashed everything that America has done for it,” exclaimed Rubio and Kennedy.
WHO’S FINAL INSULT TO THE US
“The WHO refuses to hand over the American flag that hung in front of it, arguing it has not approved our withdrawal and, in fact, claims that we owe it compensation.
“From our days as its primary founder, primary financial backer, and primary champion until now, our final day, the insults to America continue.”
The Trump administration’s vigilance for US sovereignty goes far beyond the WHO.
After a one-year notice, it has now formally withdrawn from the Paris climate agreement.
