Your life is a letter (3)

‘Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come.’ 2 Corinthians 5:17 NIV

Every day, people ‘read’ you. The question is: what kind of message are they getting? Here is what they’re supposed to get: ‘And we all… are being transformed into His image.’ (2 Corinthians 3:18 NIV) ‘Rather, we have renounced secret and shameful ways.’ (2 Corinthians 4:2 NIV) ‘Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: the old has gone, the new is here!’ (2 Corinthians 5:17 NIV) In other words, your letter should make it clear that you’re no longer the person you once were because:

(1) Christ has changed you spiritually. Once you didn’t enjoy God’s Word or obey His commands. Now you hear, receive, love, and obey His Word and revel in it (see Psalm 119:97–106).

(2) Christ has changed you morally. In 1 Corinthians 6, Paul lists many of the sins that once characterised our lives. He mentions those who are immoral, thieves, greedy, drunkards, slanderers, and swindlers. Then comes this wonderful verse: ‘And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified.’ (1 Corinthians 6:11 NIV)—just as if you’d never sinned. In other words, God has transformed your character qualities.

(3) Christ has changed you mentally. ‘Be transformed by the renewing of your mind.’ (Romans 12:2 NIV) Now you look at life, yourself, others, your challenges, your options, and opportunities in the light of God’s thoughts instead of your own. You see possibilities where before you saw only problems. Your mind, which was once frazzled by worry, is now filled with confidence and peace. In essence, your letter should transmit this message to the people you meet: ‘Christ has changed my life for the better, and if you let Him, He will change yours too!’

Your life is a letter (2)

‘We are changed into His glorious image.’ 2 Corinthians 3:18 NLT

You have probably heard the old saying about doctors and their prescriptions, ‘They can read writing, but they can’t write reading.’ A letter must be easily read and understood. Incomprehensible writing distorts the message and discourages the reader. The purpose of a letter is to convey the writer’s thoughts. When it doesn’t, the reader stops reading or fails to get the message. And since ‘You show that you are a letter from Christ,’ (2 Corinthians 3:3 NIV) here are some common distortions you need to avoid:

(1) Dishonesty on the job. That includes things like inflating your expenses, stealing company time, and taking home items you think won’t be missed.

(2) A bad attitude. For example, resentment when a friend, fellow worker, or boss asks you at an inconvenient time to help them above and beyond the normal.

(3) Substandard work reflected in shoddy products and services.

(4) Unreliability and inconsistency. Can you be counted on to be where you’re supposed to be and to fulfil your obligations?

(5) Being a killjoy. Christians who lack a sense of humour and act like they are joy-impaired hurt the cause of Christ instead of helping it.

(6) Touchiness. How do people ‘read’ you? Do you wear your feelings on your sleeve? Are you easily upset? Do you overreact to unintended offences?

(7) Temper tantrums. Are you crabby, grumpy, and complaining when things don’t go your way?

(8) Self-righteousness. This can make you speak in supercilious, religious tones that turn people off. Remember, you’re ‘known and read by everyone’, so make sure your attitude and conduct reflect well on your faith and your Lord.

Your life is a letter (1)

‘You show that you are a letter from Christ,’ 2 Corinthians 3:3 NIV

Paul wrote to the Corinthian believers: ‘You yourselves are our letter, written on our hearts, known and read by everyone. You show that you are a letter from Christ, the result of our ministry, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God… on tablets of human hearts.’ (2 Corinthians 3:2–3 NIV) Usually, when we get letters through the post, we sort it into two piles: important letters and junk mail. How do we make that determination? By answering these two questions:

(1) Who is the letter from? The source determines your interest level. And you are a letter to the world from Christ, and about Christ, ‘For what we preach is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord.’ (2 Corinthians 4:5 NIV) Religious people often promote their denomination, but we’re called to promote Christ—and Him alone. Are people really interested? Yes, Jesus promised, ‘And I, when I am lifted up… will draw all people to Myself.’ (John 12:32 NIV) Nothing is more needed today than a living portrait of Jesus reflected in the lives of His redeemed people. So, deliver your love letter to whoever crosses your path.

(2) Who is the letter addressed to? The Bible answers that question: ‘whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.’ (John 3:16 NKJV) Dr David Yonggi Cho built the world’s largest church in Seoul, South Korea: almost a million people. That’s bigger than many towns and cities. But as a young Buddhist, he was led to Christ by a lady he only met once. What if she had decided to remain silent? Your life is a letter from Christ with the potential to change someone else’s life, so make sure you deliver it.

Don’t get ahead of God

‘Except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it.’ Psalm 127:1 KJV

Terry Nance writes: ‘Satan doesn’t mind when we build, as long as he’s the head contractor. He’ll make sure we smear God’s name all over our dreams, then when they fail, it’ll look like He failed. Romans 8:14 KJV says, “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.” It’s important to know God’s plan, as well as when, where, and through whom He wants it accomplished. It’s easy to get caught up in the busyness of ministry and run ahead of Him. The key is to stay in constant communication and let Him lead you step by step so that everything is in place for a successful outcome. Like the military, the troops may be informed about the mission, but they must wait for their commander to tell them when and how to accomplish their assignment. A soldier doesn’t attend one briefing and then run off and accomplish the plan alone. He stays in contact with his commanding officer, who coordinates the mission and leads him and his fellow soldiers to victory. It’s vital to stay in touch with headquarters so you know the master plan, stay on course, and achieve victory.’

If you’re inclined to go it alone, make this your prayer: ‘God, it’s foolish to get ahead of You—but putting that into practice isn’t easy. Show me how I can spend more time with You and become more sensitive to Your voice. If I go off on my own, have Your Holy Spirit check and correct my spirit. I don’t want to build in vain. I want my ministry to be an extension of You, so You get the glory.’

Out with the old and in with the new!

‘No one puts new wine into old wineskins.’ Mark 2:22 NKJV

As a new creation, you’re no longer controlled by your old behaviour but by your relationship with Christ. You may have been given a new uniform at work when a new owner took over, but if your sullen attitude remains the same, then it’s like putting new wine into old wineskin. Jesus says we’re bound to fail because ‘the new wine bursts the wineskins… and the wineskins are ruined.’ (Mark 2:22 NKJV)

But don’t we do the same when it comes to our Christian walk? The new wine of honesty-at-work, poured into the old wineskin of cutting corners. The new wine of unconditional love, poured into the old wineskin of hatred for the family two doors down. The new wine of worship, poured into the old wineskin of idolising money, power, music, or the latest online game. The new wine of Bible study, poured into the old wineskin of no-time-for-interruptions busyness. The new wine of humility, poured into the old wineskin of conceit. The new wine of forgiveness, poured into the old wineskin of bitterness. The new wine of others first, poured into the old wineskin of selfish ambition. The new wine of joy, poured into the old wineskin of jealousy and factions. The new wine of peace, poured into the old wineskin of discord.

If any of this sounds familiar, it’s time to ditch the old wineskin and let God make you a powerful, new, clean vessel.
