颇具高压的销售办公室里一张标牌带来了一丝轻松调侃:“你想旅游吗?想要结交新友吗?想拥有一个自由的未来吗?这一切你都可以得到——只要你再犯一次错。”害怕出错使我们无法发挥最大的潜力,无从寻求诚实的忠告和反馈,不敢直言实情,以免遭受批评或离弃。为了能够成功,你必须允许周围的人持反对意见。你得不到建议时,损失可能惨重。在《这是你的船》(It’s Your Ship)这本书中,作者迈克尔·阿伯拉肖夫(Michael Abrashoff)写道:“在听到格林威尔号(USS Greenville)核潜艇在火奴鲁鲁撞击日本渔船致沉事件时,我意识到,事故的发生通常都是这样:有人预感到了潜在的险情,但实际上却保持沉默。对格林威尔号展开调查后,我在《纽约时报》(New York Times)看到一篇文章报道说核潜艇的船员‘非常尊重指挥官,以至没有质疑他的判断。’如果这样算是尊重,那我宁愿不要。你需要有人能够拍着你的肩膀问:‘这是最好的方式吗?’或叫你 “慢点儿”,“再想想”,或问你说: ‘我们所做的事情值得戕害或伤害某人吗?’历史记载着无数的事故,船长或管理层允许一种威慑的气氛弥漫在工作场地,压制下属发出原本可以避免灾难的警告。即使他们出于佩服指挥官技能和经验而不想直言不讳,也必须营造一种质疑决策的氛围,以促进双重检查。”
