渴望天家(之二)

他们渴慕的是天上更美的家乡。(希伯来书11:16)

在16和17世纪盛行的基督徒艺术,是以普通事物的美——瓶中花、曼陀林琴,以及餐柜上的水果为特色的油画。其中有两个物件——头骨和沙漏,隐藏在画作中,提醒人生如梭的本质。这些油画被称为“虚无”艺术(vanitas art)。“vanitas” 这个词源于《传道书》:“虚空的虚空,虚空的虚空,一切都是虚空。……一代过去,一代又来……”(传道书1:2-4)头骨和沙漏的象征不是制造忧郁,只是提醒我们,所拥有的东西和成就都是短暂的,不值得全身心的投入。它们用于预备我们,当面见上帝的那一刻,祂评估我们生命的意义和价值,并赋予永恒的赏赐。使徒保罗并不害怕谈论死亡,尤其是他自己的死:“因为对我来说,活着是为了基督,死了也有益处。”(腓立比书1:21)十七世纪的杰里米·泰勒(Jeremy Taylor)主教写道:“既然我们不住在这里,只是暂时逗留一天,我们必须到别处寻找一个永久的城市,在另一个国度修建我们的房子,而墙和地基就是上帝,在祂那里我们可以安息,不然就永不安宁。”不仅保罗渴慕天堂,《旧约》里的族长和英雄们也同样如此:“这些人到死都满怀信心……承认自己在世上不过是寄居的异乡人……他们渴慕的是天上更美的家乡……”(希伯来书11:13-16)这是多么美好的前景呀!
